What is ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants)?

ACCA is a globally-recognised accountancy professional body with 219,000 members in 179 countries. The ACCA qualification proves to employers that you are capable in any aspect of management or finance in virtually any sector.

To get the qualification, you must pass a maximum of 13 exams and demonstrate relevant practical experience that you can gain in any business sector.

Once qualified for ACCA, you have plenty of work opportunities – from public practice to private finance. There’s no shortage of jobs for an ACCA-qualified individual throughout the UK and beyond.

Working Hours

As an ACCA-qualified professional, you’ll typically work 35 to 45 hours weekly from Monday to Friday. There are times when you may need to work longer hours and on weekends - for instance, at the infamous month’s end or end of the financial year! Or when meeting pressing client deadlines.

Some work opportunities exist for flexible working, job-sharing, and part-time work.

ACCA Career Scope

  • Entry level: Internal auditor, accountant, financial analyst, tax accountant, and business analyst
  • Middle level: Business advisor, management accountant, forensic accountant, credit control manager, insolvency practitioner, risk management, and financial controller
  • Senior level: Treasurer, CFO (Chief Financial Officer), governance officer, and group accountant

The starting salaries for ACCA jobs in the corporate and private sectors are usually higher than in the public sector. Moreover, chartered certified accountants working in insurance companies and banks tend to earn more.

Factors That Help Increase a Chartered Accountant’s Pay Scale

  • Skills and Knowledge

These skills can help increase your salary, especially in the UK: payroll administration, financial analysis, financial reporting, budget management, tax compliance, tax consulting, financial analysis, account management, auditing, and financial reporting.

Remember also that clearing your ACCA courses with distinction helps as it will reflect in your career and eventually boost your salary package.

  • Years of Experience

To build a rewarding and successful career as a certified chartered accountant, you need to gain experience in your field. As you do, your knowledge and skills increase, and you can demand a higher salary.

To start, try to gain experience in a financial role through a part-time job, voluntary work, or even shadowing an accountant to understand the work involved. Don’t throw your hands up in exasperation if you’re at the outset of your career! Take the initiative and seek out opportunities to gain experience, paid or or not! This will pay off later…

  • Location

A developed cosmopolitan city or metropolitan area will tend to pay higher for any job. The same applies to chartered accountants - working in a developed city or country will lead to higher pay.

Other than the United Kingdom, high-paying countries include Ireland, Switzerland, Canada, and Luxembourg.

  • Qualification

Chartered accountants enjoy higher pay packages and good job opportunities.

As you earn more qualifications, your pay scale increases too. Some of these qualifications are the CIMA qualification if you want to become a chartered management accountant; the ICAS qualification if you're going to become a chartered accountant; and the ICAEW qualification, if you want to become an associate chartered accountant.

  • Specialisations

Your pay will likewise increase if you specialise in a particular field and become known as an expert, for instance, in financial accounting or management accounting.

Other specialisations include audit and insurance, tax, business insolvency and recovery, forensic accounting, and corporate finance.
